  • Leading role: Bougherra was superb during Algeria's historic World Cup run in Brazil.

Fujairah’s ambitious plans to re-establish themselves in the Arabian Gulf League have continued after they closed on the signature of Algeria’s World Cup 2014 captain Madjid Bougherra.

The 30-year-old is expected to arrive in the UAE today to join the newly promoted side on a free transfer following the expiry of his deal with Qatar Stars League champions Lekhwiya.

The centre-back made three appearances in Brazil during his nation’s historic run to the last 16.

Back in April of this year, Bougherra exclusively told Sport360° that he had offers from the region but would only move to a club chasing titles, meaning today's news both highlights Fujaraih's lofty ambitions and need for a good campaign.

Bougherra’s arrival already adds to the exciting signings of ex-Al Ain stars Jorge Valdivia and Boubacar Sanogo, plus Ghana international midfielder Charles Takyi.

The announcement of the former Rangers man's signing has been made on the same day that new team-mate Valdivia announced his retirement from international duty despite a good World Cup campaign with Chile.

Bougherra provides great experience in defence for Fujairah, previously featuring in both the Asian and European Champions Leagues.
