  • High hopes: Luis Garcia joined Bani Yas following spells at Levante and Getafe in his homeland.

New Bani Yas coach Luis Garcia is expecting a difficult start to life in the Arabian Gulf League (AGL), saying opening day opponents Al Nasr pose a stern test for his team.

Garcia took over as Bani Yas boss in July this year when he turned down an offer in his native Spain to sign a two-year contract with Al Samawi with the task of leading the club to a top-four finish.

In doing so the Spaniard became the tenth Bani Yas coach in the last four years with the hope that he can add some much needed stability to the club and instil a desire in his team that he feels has been missing in recent years.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Garcia said: “I have seen Al Nasr play and they have a strong team with skillful international players such as Brett Holman and Ibrahima Toure, but we will put in the effort and work together as a team to overcome them.

"We have the desire to win and get off to the best possible start.

“I hope the character of the team will show in our games and that we will play good football and always put up a strong fight. This is our main objective."

Meanwhile, Nasr manager Ivan Jovanovic – embarking on his second season in the AGL – is looking forward to building on the GCC Club Cup title his side lifted in their last competitive match in May.

“Al Nasr is stronger this season than ever before,” the Serbian said at his pre-match press conference.

“Having a higher ambition is an essential factor in developing our level, and we have worked hard during the 2 months of pre-season to be ready and prepare well for the new season.”
