UAE’s Al Hosani records personal best throw in Olympics qualifier

    UAE’s Fatma Al Hosani threw a per­sonal best of 37.20 metres yesterday to place 13th in qualifying for the discus throw event at the Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China.

    She accomplished the feat with her first attempt and then recorded distances of 36.07m and 36.28m.

    Ukraine’s Al’Ona Byelyakova led the field by throwing 50.89m on her final attempt.

    Al Hosani will look to keep her success going in Final B on Sat­urday morning, while Byelyakova headlines Final A on Saturday night.

    In sailing, UAE’s Hamad Al Ham­madi finished 27th in Races 5 and 7, but climbed to 21st in Race 6 in the Byte CII one person dinghy.

    Portugal’s Rodolfo Pires claimed the top spot in Race 6 with a time of 36 min 22sec, while Singapore’s Bernie Chin won Race 5 in 40 min 30sec, his second first-place fin­ish after previously topping Race 3 on Tuesday. In Race 7, Hungary’s Jonatan Vadnai topped in 37min 40sec.

    Race 8 will take place today, while Races 9 and 10 are tomorrow with the finals on Saturday.

    In swimming, UAE’s Ali Al Kaabi finished eighth in the 50m butter­fly. The 17-year-old completed Heat 3 in 26.61sec. The result placed him last, 1.43sec behind leader Guido Buscaglia of Argentina, who clocked 25.18sec.

    Zambia’s Ralph Goveia was second at 25.33sec and Australia’s Nicholas Brown third at 25.44sec. The finals are today.
