    SERENA WILLIAMS

Tennis legend Williams had a magnificent season, winning three of the year's four Grand Slams. Her Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon titles took her to a total of 21 Slams, leaving her just one short of Steffi Graf's all-time record.

Williams will no doubt reflect with disappointment on her shock defeat to Italy’s Roberta Vinci in the semi-finals of the US Open, but despite coming up just short of achieving the 'Serena Slam', she still boasts an incredible 94 percent win ratio for 2015 – losing just three matches all year.

    KATIE LEDECKY

The 18-year-old American was in blistering form at the World Championships in Russia claiming five gold medals and breaking three world records.

Ledecky’s wins came in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyles and the 4×200 metre freestyle.

She further cemented her status as the best inform swimmer in the world by shattering the American short-course record by more than 10 seconds in December!

    CARLI LLOYD

Captained America to World Cup glory in July, scoring six goals in seven games.

The Houston star scored a remarkable 16 minute hat-trick against Japan in the final, with the last goal being hailed as ‘one of the most remarkable goals ever witnessed in a Women’s World Cup’.

For her efforts, she was rewarded with the Golden Ball as player of the tournament.

    JESSICA ENNIS-HILL

Having missed the entire 2014 season due to the birth of her first child, Ennis-Hill returned to claim heptathlon gold at the World Athletics Championships in August.

Her success saw her nominated as one of three athletes for European Athlete of the Year, which was won by Holland’s Daphne Schnippers.

    HOLLY HOLM

Holm pulled off the biggest upset in UFC history with her victory over Ronda Rousey in Melbourne.

In the build-up to the event, Rousey was unbeaten in 12 fights and only one competitor had taken her past the first round.

Despite being a massive underdog, Holm won the fight via a second round knock-out to clinch the bantamweight title.
