Former Australia captain Steve Smith struck 61 in his first competitive game since the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.
The 29-year-old was banned from domestic and international cricket for 12 months by Cricket Australia for his role in the ball-tampering plot during the Newlands Test in March.
Three months on and Smith returned to professional cricket, taking to the field for the Toronto Nationals in the inaugural Global T20 Canada curtain-raiser against the Vancouver Knights.
In the field, Smith took a catch at long-on to remove Chris Gayle, but with Evin Lewis on 47, dropped a skier which proved costly as the opening batsman went on to smash 96.
Having seen the Knights rack up 227 for four, Smith then hit eight fours and one six during a 41-ball innings before being stumped off the bowling of compatriot Fawad Ahmed in the 14th over.
His tally – beaten only by Anton Devcich, who finished on 92 not out – helped the side power to a six-wicket victory with four balls remaining.
