  • Incredible performance: England's Stuart Broad.

After Stuart Broad's incredible eight wicket haul against Australia in the fourth Ashes Test, cricket statistician Mohandas Menon takes us through the stats from the Englishman's impressive feat.

  • Stuart Broad became the fifth Englishman and the 29th bowler overall to claim 300 or more wickets in Test cricket

    • By the end of Australia’s first innings, Broad equaled Fred Trueman's tally of 307 wickets for England, which means only three Englishmen are ahead of him now (Jimmy Anderson 413, Ian Botham 383 and Bob Willis 325).

    • Broad, who was unlucky to miss this landmark in the third Test at Edgbaston, needed just three balls bowled on Thursday to achieve this.

    • By achieving this feat in his 83rd Test match, he is the joint fourth slowest to reach this milestone after Kiwi Daniel Vettori (94th Test), Sri Lanka Chaminda Vaas (90) and India’s Zaheer Khan (89) and Kapil Dev (also 83).

    • With both Chris Rogers (his first Test duck!) and David Warner making ducks, this is the first time since December 1950, when both Aussie openers made ducks in the same Ashes innings. Jack Moroney and Arthur Morris were dismissed for ducks at Brisbane, but in the 2nd innings by Alec Bedser. For the record, the last time both Aussie openers were dismissed for ducks on the opening day came at Kandy against Sri Lanka on September 9, 1999 (9-9-1999).

    • Australia became the first team in Test history to be dismissed before lunch on the opening day of a Test match on two occasions. The first time also coming against England – at Lords on June 22, 1896, when they were dismissed for 53 in 22.3 overs, and 119 years later, for 60 in 18.3 overs at Trent Bridge on Thursday. Incidentally, the two other Test teams to face this ignominy are India (76 in 20 overs) against South Africa at Ahmedabad on April 3, 2008 and New Zealand (45 in 19.2 overs) against South Africa at Cape Town on January 2, 2013.

    • Stuart Broad claimed his first five wickets in his first four overs, when his bowling figures read: 4-3-8-5. He in fact, needed just 19 balls to claim his first five wickets, which equaled the Test record for the quickest five wicket haul previously achieved by an Aussie left arm pacer Ernie Toshack who had figures of 2.3-1-2-5 (8 ball overs) against India at the Gabba, Brisbane in December 1947.

    BROAD’S 8/15 IS NOW…

    • The 21st best bowling figures in Test match cricket history

    • The 8th best bowling performance by an Englishman in Tests

    • The 3rd best bowling figures by an Englishman in the Ashes, after Jim Laker’s 10/53 and 9/37 in   the same Test match (at Manchester in 1956).

    • The 6th best Test bowling performance by any opponent bowler against Australia.

    • The 5th best bowling performance in Tests in England after Jim Laker (10/53 & 9/37) in 1956 & Devon Malcolm (9/57) in 1994 and Sri Lankan M Muralidharan (9/65 in 1998).

    • The 3rd best by a bowler taking exactly eight wickets in a Test innings after Englishmen George Lohmann (8/7 vs South Africa at Port Elizabeth in February 1896) and Johnny Briggs (8/11 vs Australia at Nottingham in March 1889).

    • The best Test bowling figures at Trent Bridge, obliterating M Muralidharan’s 8/70 in 2006. The only other bowler to take an eight wicket haul at Trent Bridge was Englishman Bernard Bosanquet, who is best known for inventing the googly. He claimed 8/107 also against Australia in May 1905.

    • The best bowling by any Test bowler before lunch on the opening day of a Test match, bettering Aussie Graham McKenzie’s 6/34 vs India at the MCG in December 30, 1967

    • The best bowling in Tests since 2000 after Sri Lankans M Muralidharan (9/51 vs Zimbabwe at Kandy in January 2002) and 9/127 by Rangana Herath (vs Pakistan at ColomboSSC in August 2014)

    • For Stuart Broad, Trent Bridge, his home ground, seems to be a lucky one. In 2011 against India he claimed his first Test hat-trick and on Thursday, achieved this remarkable spell.

    • Broad now has 33 Test wickets at this ground in seven matches. Only James Anderson (53 in 8) and Alec Bedser (41 in 6) have claimed more at Trent Bridge in all Test matches.

    • Broad is now only the fourth English bowler to take a five or more wicket haul before lunch on the opening day of a Test match, and the last one to do was SF Barnes against South Africa at the Old Wanderers at Johannesburg, nearly 102 years ago, on Boxing Day of 1913.

    • Australia’s 60 in just 18.3 overs (111 balls) is the fewest number of overs faced by a side while batting in the first innings of a Test match. Previously, the Australians had faced just 22.3 five ball overs (113 balls) when they were dismissed before lunch at Lord’s in 1896.

    • Interestingly, all of Broad’s eight victims came via catches in the field, without any help from the keeper. This is the third occasion this has occurred in Tests: the first came in the Ashes Test at Adelaide in 1929 (Jack White 8/126 in February 1929) and then at Port of Spain by West Indian Jack Noreiga (9/95 against India in March 1971). What fascinating is that Broad is the only pacemen in this list!
