  • Abhishek Nair hit a quick-fire 40 and took one wicket as the Young Talent Cricket Academy (YTCA) juniors beat Washington CC in an Under-11 tournament in Durham.

YTCA captain Rahul Nambiar also played a key role, scoring 22 runs and accounting for two dismissals.

The touring Dubai side batted first and put on 156 in their allotted 30 overs, with Hrithik (21), Shashwik Shetty (29) and Adil Ali (13) also among the runs.

In reply, YTCA’s Rahul drew first blood with the very first ball of the innings, but J. Singh and M. Brown then staged a fight-back scoring 22 and 49 runs respectively.

Washington CC’s chase, however, was hampered by some accurate bowling by Rahul (2-25) and Abhishek, with one wicket, which eventually restricted the hosts to 136-6 in 30 overs.

In an earlier semi-final match, YTCA defeated Philadelphia CC. Coach Vishan Fernando and YTCA director Shahzad Altaf said they were happy with the way their wards had performed in the tournament.

The trophies were presented by Dr Rajkumar of Unicare Medical Centre – one of the sponsors – and Allen Clarke, one of the top umpires in Durham, in the presence of a large local crowd and parents of the players.

Meanwhile, in another match, YTCA Under-15 speedster Siddhant Jhurani produced a terrific spell to secure victory over Washington CC at the Washington Cricket Club grounds in Durham.

YTCA skipper Taran won the toss and elected to field. Siddhant took 3-16 in his six overs and was well assisted by Vaibhav Chandrasekhar from the other end.

Chandrasekhar took 2-23 as Washington could manage just 87 runs in their 30 overs. Sparsh Jain, Taran Attavar, Bharath Sreenivasan and Karan Achutanand contributed with one wicket each.

In reply, YTCA started on a sound footing with an opening stand of 26 runs between Chandrasekhar and Abhishek Nair, but with the fall of the latter’s wicket it appeared the visitors might after all not overhaul the small target.

Taran then played a responsible innings of 19 and was involved in a 40-run partnership with Chandrasekhar. Bharath Sreenivasan scored a quick 16 off 15 balls, and after YTCA were reduced to 77-5 Siddhant played some big shots to ensure that the Dubai outfit eventually cruised home in the 21st over.
