  • Ishant Sharma during the recent Test series in West Indies

India will miss star fast bowler Ishant Sharma for the first Test against New Zealand at Kanpur as he is recovering from chikungunya.

Indian coach Anil Kumble confirmed the news at a press conference and also revealed that no replacement has been sought in Ishant’s absence.

The 28-year-old has been India’s most reliable pacer in the longest format of the game, claiming 209 wickets at an average of 36.71 in his 72 matches.

India are expected to field two fast bowlers with either Bhuvneshwar Kumar or Umesh Yadav set to join Mohammed Shami in opening the bowling for Virat Kohli’s men.

Meanwhile, New Zealand have two players unavailable with all-rounder Jimmy Neesham ruled out due to a rib injury and fast bowler Tim Southee taking no part in the series after he suffered an ankle ligament strain.
