  • Rahul Dravid, the India U-19 coach.

Punjab all-rounder Abhishek Sharma has been named as the captain of the India U-19 team that will play in the Youth Asia Cup. The tournament is scheduled to be take place in Sri Lanka in December 2016.

Earlier this year, in the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy, Sharma shone with the bat and the ball – ending the league stage of the tournament as the highest run-scorer and as the highest wicket-taker with 766 runs and 32 wickets respectively from just four matches.

Mumbai’s golden boy Prithvi Shaw has also made the team. Shaw had made the headlines in 2013 when he scored 546 in a match in the inter-school Harris Shield tournament.

The team, coached by Indian legend Rahul Dravid, will be hopeful of putting the disappointment of the defeat in the U-19 World Cup final suffered by their predecessors behind them.

The Indian U-19 side, led by Ishan Kishan, had gone into the World Cup earlier this year as huge favourites and went through the tournament unbeaten before they were somewhat surprisingly beaten by the West Indies in the final.
