  • Virat Kohli reacts after getting out hit wicket.

In 139 years of Test cricket, Indian captain Virat Kohli’s dismissal in the first Test against England at Rajkot was the 155th instance of a batsman getting out hit wicket.

Kohli was batting on 40 when he went on the back foot to pull a short delivery from Adil Rashid to mid-wicket. It didn’t seem like there was any fault with the shot until English wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow noted that one of the bails was on the ground.

Bairstow immediately went up in celebration and despite the on-field umpires going to the third umpire for the final decision, Kohli knew that his fate had been sealed.

The Delhi batsman’s dismissal was the 22nd instance of an Indian batsman losing their wicket in such a manner in Test cricket.

The first Indian batsman to be dismissed hit wicket in Tests was Lala Amarnath against the West Indies at Chennai in 1949. Incidentally, the former Indian captain’s son Mohinder Amarnath fell in such a manner as many as three times in the longest format of the game – the highest for any Indian batsman.

Here, we look at all the 22 instances of Indian batsmen getting out hit wicket.
