Karun Nair became just the second Indian batsman to score a triple century in Test cricket during the fifth Test against England at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Monday.
During his interview with Ravi Shastri at the end of day’s play, Nair was asked about an incident from earlier this year (July 2016) when he almost drowned during a trip to Pathanamthitta in the Indian state of Kerala.
Although he plays for Karnataka in domestic cricket, the 25-year-old’s family originally hails from Kerala.
The Karnataka batsman had been present on a snake boat which was carrying around 100 people to Aranmulala temple before it overturned in the river Pampa. Luckily, there were rescue boats around and most people were saved.
Nair admitted to Shastri that he did not know how to swim and counts himself fortunate to have been rescued on that occasion.
“I didn’t know how to swim. People there rescued me and I was lucky to live again,” he said.
