  • India capped their tour of South Africa with a seven-run win in Cape Town that sealed a 2-1 T20 series win. It followed a 5-1 ODI series success and a 2-1 defeat in the Test series for the Indians.

It was just reward for the Indians as they challenged the South Africans in every department of the game and maintained their consistency. However, all the hard work has resulted in just one ranking point for Virat Kohli’s team in the latest ICC T20 team rankings.

Since third-ranked India were playing the seventh-ranked Proteas, wins counted for less – half a point for each victory in India’s case. They moved from 121 to 122 in the table.

Compare that to the T20 tri-series Down Under where Australia gained a staggering 15 points during the same period for remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. Three games of the seven-match tournament were played in Australia with the rest in New Zealand.

The Aussies won five matches, including the final, to jump from seventh position to second, gaining 15 points in the process. That’s three ranking points for one win, including for matches at home.

India, on the other hand, got half a point for each T20 win in South Africa.

No matter what the parameters, one T20 can’t be worth six times more than another.
