  • The broadcasting rights go on sale on Tuesday.

Tech giants Google and Facebook are set to bid for the broadcast rights of cricket in India over the next five years come Tuesday.

BCCI will be selling the broadcast rights for Indian cricket until 2023 through an online auction which will take place on Tuesday.

Apart from Google and Facebook, Star India, Sony Pictures, streaming service Yupp TV and Reliance Jio will be competing for the rights. This will be the first time that Google will be bidding for the rights to broadcast Indian cricket while Facebook competed for IPL rights where they lost out to Star India.

Tuesday’s sale will cover the rights to broadcast all home international matches for the Indian men’s and women’s teams along with domestic cricket for a period from April 15, 2018 to March 31, 2023.

Star India currently holds the rights for Indian cricket and they are expected to go big once again in the auction on Tuesday.

This is the first time that the BCCI has decided to hold an online sale of the rights in a bid to encourage more transparency about the process.

The governing body is expected to rake in the cash once again after selling the IPL broadcast rights for a whopping $2.55 billion (Dh9.3bn) to Star India in September.
