9.15pm England on top after day one of Second Test

England have finished the opening day of the Second Test at Headingley in a commanding position.

After Pakistan were bowled out for 174, openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings got off to a solid start with a 53-run stand which was broken by Faheem Ashraf after the latter was caught behind by Sarfraz for 29 runs.

Cook and Root took England past the 100-run mark before the former was dismissed on 46 by Hasan Ali. Night watchman Dominic Bess played out the last couple of overs to leave England 106 for 2 at stumps, just 68 runs behind with eight first innings wickets remaining. Play resumes on Saturday.

7.21 pm Late rally from Pakistan as Shadab Khan takes the visitors to 174 all out against England

19-year-old Shadab Khan contributed a crucial 56 as Pakistan struggled to 174 on the opening day of the Second Test against England at Headingley.

Pakistan’s score would have been a lot worse if not for Khan’s contribution. He came to the wicket with the tourists 78 for 5 and shared partnerships of 34 with Mohammad Amir (8th wicket) and 43 with Hasan Ali (9th wicket).

In replay England have started strongly to be 39 for 0 with Alastair Cook 15 and the recalled Keaton Jennings 23. You can follow our LIVE SCORES for the Test HERE.

Not all cricketers get into the game the traditional way. For many, cricket is a passion they pursue while sustaining their life through other means.

Pakistan seamer Mohammad Abbas used to work as a welder and in a leather factory before he got a spot in the district Under-19 team. Those days are well and truly behind Abbas after his match-winning eight-wicket haul at the Lord’s Test against England.

12pm – Brathwaite bats for Tests

West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite said he is a fan of innovation in T20 cricket but wants the sanctity of Test cricket to be preserved.

“I’d like to see the Test format stay as it is. I don’t know whether that’s financially viable, but I think the Test nations have to work to make that
stay and be the case,” he said.
