  • In control: Ed Barnard top-scored for England with a 93-run knock.

England thrashed hosts UAE by 213 runs in the opening match of the Under-19 World Cup at Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Half-centuries by Ed Barnard (93) and Ben Duckett (83), helped England reach a massive total of 315/8, despite the best efforts of all-rounder Pankaj Samant, who finished with three wickets.

In reply, the UAE were all out for 102, with captain Rohit Singh top-scoring with 38 that included four boundaries and one six with Will Rhodes finished with three wickets.

The hosts must win their next match against New Zealand on Sunday to have any chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals, while England meet Sri Lanka in Dubai.

England got off to a strong start with openers Jonathan Tattersall and Harry Finch putting on 50 for no loss. The hosts got their first wicket with Justin James dismissing Tattersall (29).

Finch then fell for 49 after being stumped by wicketkeeper Shivank Vijaykumar following Moaaz Qazi's delivery.

Ryan Higgins, who had scored 225 runs in England's tri-series in UAE last December, added 19 runs before being dismissed by Shahrukh Ahmed.

With Barnard and Duckett at the crease, the two batsmen steadied the innings, with both hitting 12 boundaries each as the duo put on 151 for the fourth wicket.

But their partnership was broken with Singh, called up to the seniors world T20 squad, taking a smart catch to dismiss Duckett, following Samant's delivery.

The dismissal sparked a batting collapse by England with the UAE taking four wickets for 28 runs. England captain Rhodes (4) was the fifth batsman to go after a run out by Ahmed.

Singh then got the crucial wicket of Barnard after excellent bowling from Samant and Ahmed got his second run-out with Joe Clarke (19) the victim. Samant finished the innings with Jack Winslade out for a duck.

The mammoth total was England's highest score against UAE, with their previous best 300 for 6 in the tri-series last December.

In reply, UAE got off to a terrible start with Chirag Suri out for a duck after being cleanly bowled by Matt Fisher in the second over.

The hosts lost their second wicket, with Fisher dismissing Shorye Chopra (6) following another superb delivery from the fast bowler.

Dan D'Souza and Vijayakumar provided some resistance with both scoring boundaries. However, the hosts were soon three wickets down with Vijayakumar (26) the victim.

The right-hander, who had already hit one six, was brilliantly caught by Winslade following Rhodes' delivery. A superb diving catch by Tattersall saw the end of the innings for D'Souza (7) as UAE were four down with 42 runs on the board.

Singh added some grit with some driven shots but was left frustrated as UAE lost three further wickets as Omer Rizwan (6), Qazi (5, lbw) and Sunair Khan (1) were dismissed with UAE at 91-7.

The hosts added six more runs to their tally before losing their eighth wicket with captain Rhodes ending the innings of Singh (38) in the 30th over.

The match was ended with two wickets in the 32 overs, with Rhodes removing Samant (3) and Justin being run out (1).
