  • Jos Buttler’s boundary off the last ball in England’s first innings against Pakistan on Tuesday was the shot that broke the world record.

    Here, we look at the five biggest totals.

    ENGLAND – 444/3 vs PAKISTAN, 2016

    England set a world record for an innings total in one-day international cricket against Pakistan in Nottingham scoring 444/3.

    Alex Hales struck 22 fours and four sixes in his innings of 171 from 122 balls – the highest score by an England batsman in ODIs.

    SRI LANKA – 443/9 vs NETHERLANDS,  2006

    The Sri Lankan cricket team toured Netherlands in July 2006 for two ODIs. They scored 443/9 in the first match in Amstelveen.

    Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 157 off 104 balls in a 195-run win for the visitors.

    SOUTH AFRICA – 439/2 vs WEST INDIES, 2015

    South Africa crushed the West Indies in a 148-run victory at the Wanderers in 2015.

    AB de Villiers struck the fastest century in ODI history, reaching the milestone in 31 balls on his way to a score of 149 from a further 13 deliveries.

    SOUTH AFRICA – 438/9 vs AUSTRALIA, 2006

    Australian skipper Ricky Ponting hit 164 off 105 balls to help his side beat the record score with 434-4 and look certain to cruise to victory in Johannesburg.

    However, Herschelle Gibbs led the onslaught for the Proteas, smashing a stunning 175 off 111 balls while Graeme Smith’s 90 guided the hosts to a memorable victory, setting a new record with 438/9.

    SOUTH AFRICA – 438/4 vs INDIA, 2015

    Quinton de Kock, Faf de Plessis and AB de Villiers all scored hundreds as South Africa crushed India to amass a score of 438-4 .

    As a result, they went on to win the deciding ODI by 214 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
