    500th TEST

Pretty much everyone knew this stat coming into the first Test between India and New Zealand at Kanpur. This was India’s 500th Test and there was much hype surrounding it.

There was a felicitation program organised before the start of play, with numerous former Indian captains including Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, MS Dhoni, Kapil Dev etc. honoured.

Current Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli mentioned that he was ‘grateful and honoured’ to be captaining the side on such a momentous occasion.

India took 30770 days to compete in their 500th Test, the shortest time by any team to have reached the milestone. West Indies, England and Australia took 31493, 35560 and 41558 days respectively.

FOUR FIRST-CLASS TRIPLE CENTURIONS IN INDIA’S XI

This was the first time that an Indian Test team fielded four players who have scored a triple century in first-class cricket.

KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja have all scored triple centuries at the domestic level. Incredibly, Jadeja – who batted at number nine for India in the first innings on Thursday – has three first-class centuries to his name.

Virender Sehwag still remains the only Indian batsman to register a 300+ score in an innings at Test level.

    KOHLI AVERAGES 14.66 AGAINST WAGNER

    Virat Kohli vs Neil Wagner

    • Innings: 5
    • Runs: 44
    • Dismissals: 3
    • Average: 14.66

Neil Wagner might not be the most renowned fast bowler in world cricket, having bowled in the shadows of Tim Southee and Trent Boult, but his performances deserve respect.

In 23 Tests, the South Africa-born Wagner took 94 wickets at an average of below 30 which is a respectable record in modern-day Test cricket.

Wagner has also held his own against the best in the business, as shown by his stats against Indian captain Virat Kohli. During India’s tour of New Zealand in 2014, the left-arm pacer got the better of Kohli on two of the three occasions that the Indian captain was dismissed.

In fact, in the first Test of that tour at Auckland, it was Wagner’s dismissal of Kohli, when India were 222/2 (chasing 407 in the fourth innings), that changed the course of the match. India lost quick wickets after Kohli’s dismissal and the hosts eventually won the game by 40 runs.

It was Wagner again who got the upper-hand on Kohli on Thursday at Kanpur, with a well-planned short delivery. Kohli has just scored 44 runs in five innings against Wagner, at an average of 14.66.

1500 RUNS FOR PUJARA IN INDIA

During his knock of 62 on Thursday, Cheteshwar Pujara became the 22nd Indian batsman to score 1500 runs at home.

Pujara is the only player from the Indian XI in Kanpur who has reached the landmark. Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli, with 1154 and 1068 runs respectively, will be expected to join Pujara on the list by the end of the year.

The Saurashtra batsman has scored 1543 runs in 18 matches with five centuries to his credit. Interestingly, his average of 64.29 in India is the highest for any Indian (with 1500+ runs) under the selected parameter.

Sachin Tendulkar, unsurprisingly, with 7216 runs, is the top Indian run-scorer in Test cricket at home.

FOUR YEARS SINCE INDIA HAVE BEATEN NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand have not lost a single match in any format of cricket to India in just over four years. The last time India beat the Kiwis was in Bengaluru in 2012 (August 31-September 3).

Since then, the two sides have faced each other in two Tests with New Zealand defeating India in one Test and the other ending in a draw.

In the five ODI matches between the two teams, four have been won by the Blackcaps, with one match ending in a tie.

New Zealand have also overcome India in two T20I matches.
