  • BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke.

According to the Indian Express, BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke has written a letter to England team manager Phil Neal stating that they couldn’t sign the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the England Cricket Board (ECB) because of the restrictions put on them by a court order which are based on the Lodha Committee’s recommendations.

“Dear Phil, I warmly welcome you for the upcoming cricket series. I am however at great pains to inform you that the BCCI is at present not in a position to execute the MoU between the Indian Cricket Board and the ECB. This is due to restrictions on execution of contracts imposed on the BCCI by a Court order,” Shirke stated in his letter.

Shirke further mentioned that the BCCI have sought the permission of the execution of the MoU, but they haven’t been granted the same yet. There are just five days to go for the start of the Test series, with the England Test squad having arrived in India on Wednesday.

The BCCI are, by far, the richest cricketing board in the world, but their financial transactions seem to be restricted in the light of recent events.

“Certain courtesies such as hotel, travel and various other arrangements have been extended to you on arrival of the team in India. However, till the MoU is executed, the BCCI is not in a position to commit to paying for the same,” Shirke wrote.

“Please make arrangements to remit such payments. The BCCI will inform you as and when further instructions are received by the BCCI from the Lodha Committee.”

Shrike also apologised to Neal over the inconvenience caused to English team as this is something that has never happened before when a team has toured India for a Test series.

“I apologise on behalf of the BCCI for inconvenience that is being caused,” Shirke added.

India and England are scheduled to begin their five-match Test series at Rajkot on November 9.
