India will be pleased with their bowling performance, having restricted England to 268/8 despite the visitors winning the toss and electing to bat first.
Jonny Bairstow was England’s best batsman, notching up his 13th half-century in Test cricket while the returning Jos Buttler scored a fighting 43. The Indian bowlers shared the wickets among themselves, with Jayant Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav picking up two wickets each.
There was a lot of praise for the Indian bowlers on Twitter, with former opening batsman Aakash Chopra suggesting that Jayant Yadav’s performance was better than his figures suggest. Former England captain Michael Vaughan, meanwhile, mentioned that having won the toss, England have no excuses if they lose this game.
Predictably, there was a lot of talk about Parthiv Patel who made his return to the Indian Test team after a gap of more than eight years. Even more predictable was television host Piers Morgan’s tweet about Kevin Pietersen during England’s batting collapse.
Here, we collect the top tweets of the day.

Two wickets for Jayant...but when you realise that he got Root and then well set Bairstow, it becomes more than what the scorecard suggests.

Bowling and batting performances can sometimes be outside your control. But fielding never is. No excuses for dropping catches.
