  • Smriti Mandhana after reaching a century against Australia earlier this year.

Smriti Mandhana is the only Indian cricketer to be named in the ICC Women’s Team of the Year 2016, which was announced by the world cricketing board on Wednesday.

This is the first time that the ICC have named a Women’s Team of the Year and they have taken ODIs as well as T20Is into consideration when selecting the team. The time period has been mentioned as between 14 September 2015 and 20 September 2016.

Speaking about the team selection, ICC chief executive David Richardson praised the quality of women’s cricket which is growing at a phenomenal rate.

“The quality and depth of the women’s game continues to grow year by year, with a number of outstanding performances during the voting period, the selectors must have had an exceptionally difficult task in settling on the final 12 players,” said Richardson.

Within the time period, Mandhana played five ODIs – notching up 264 runs at an average of 52.80. She is currently representing the Brisbane Heat in the second edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).

West Indies’ Stafanie Taylor, who led her team during the victorious Women’s World T20 campaign, has been named as the captain of the side.

New Zealand’s Suzie Bates, meanwhile, has been announced as the ICC Women’s ODI and T20I Player of the Year.
