How will India respond to Australia's 451?

Resuming their innings on 299/4, Australia will aim to kick on and post a huge first innings total on the board in the third Test against India at Ranchi.

Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell batted superbly on Thursday and the visitors will be hoping for more of the same on day two.

On the other hand, the Indian team – who were without their captain Virat Kohli [due to injury] for a long period on day one – will want to restrict Australia’s score and get to bat as soon as possible.

Steve Smith after scoring his century [Sportzpics]

Australia took the upper hand on day one of the third Test against India, thanks to an unbeaten 159-run partnership between captain Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell.

At the end of day’s play, the visitors were 299/4 after Smith scored his 19th Test ton and Maxwell brought up his first half-century in Test cricket.

On Twitter, former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist called Smith a “legend” while former pacer Mitchell Johnson called it an “outstanding day [for Australia]”.

Indian commentator Harsha Bhogle, on the other hand, feels that India require a special batting performance to come back into this match.

Australia on top.

Steve Smith registered his 19th Test century as Australia had a good day with the bat after electing to bat first in the third Test against India on Thursday.

At one point, Australia seemed to be in a bit of a bother, having lost four wickets with just 140 runs on the board. That was when Glenn Maxwell joined Smith in the middle and the duo have put on 159 unbeaten runs for the fifth wicket so far.

Maxwell brought up his first Test half-century and is batting on 82 at the end of play on day one. On the other hand, Smith is unbeaten on 117 and looks good for a really big score.

Earlier in the day, fast bowler Umesh Yadav picked up two wickets with some superb reverse swing. For Australia, Matt Renshaw once again showed why he is rated so highly as he looked fluent during his knock of 44.
Apart from the scorecard, there was another worry for the Indian team as captain Virat Kohli was forced off the park after an injury to his right shoulder during the second session. He sat out the rest of the day. BRIEF SCORES Australia 299/4 [Smith 117*, Maxwell 82*, Umesh 2/63] vs India.
