Worcestershire’s Ross Whiteley became only the sixth player in cricket’s long and illustrious history to have hit six six’s in an over of first class or international cricket. Whiteley achieved the feat on Sunday in a NatWest T20 Blast clash against Yorkshire at Headingly.

The unfortunate victim of Whiteley’s ruthless display of aggression was 21-year-old Karl Carver. The young left-arm spinner however, will find comfort in the fact that he’s not the first one to be on the receiving end of such explosiveness in a list which includes seasoned international cricketers.

While Whiteley joins the elite club of the select few who have achieved this rare feat.

Here, we take a look at the other members of the six sixes in an over club.

    Sir Garfield Sobers – August 31, 1968

Arguably the greatest all rounder to have played the game, Sobers was the first cricketer to achieve the unique phenomenon in a first class match between Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan.

Captaining Nottinghamshire, Sobers scored six maximums in an over against Malcolm Nash. The Glamorgan man bowled medium-fast usually, but enamored by Derek Underwood’s success, he decided to experiment with spin bowling.

He later commented, “Sobers came along and quickly ended my slow-bowling career. It was a pretty short experiment.”

    Ravi Shastri – January 10, 1985

The newly appointed Indian head coach Shastri equaled Sober’s feat almost 16 years later in a Ranji trophy tie between Bombay and Baroda at the Wankhede stadium.

The Bombay all-rounder was batting on 147 when Baroda part time spinner Tilak Raj came on to bowl on the third day. Shastri would finish the over at 183 runs after plundering six sixes.

Poor Raj was so dejected and shell-shocked that he refused to pose with Shastri for the next day’s newspaper.

    Herschelle Gibbs – March 16, 2007

The South African maverick was as destructive a batsman as they come. While Sobers and Shastri had achieved the unique distinction in first-class matches, Gibbs became the first person to carry out the feat in an international match.

It came in a group game against minnows Netherland during the ODI World Cup 2007 in the West Indies.

The bowler to bear the brunt of Gibbs’ punishment was part-time leg spinner Daan van Bunge.

    Yuvraj Singh – September 19, 2007

The very same year, Gibbs’ six sixes in an over was matched by India’s Yuvraj Singh during the inaugural ICC World Cup T20 in South Africa.

In a super-eights match against England in Durban, the stylish southpaw took apart the then still a novice Stuart Broad to all parts of the ground in the penultimate over of the Indian innings.

Co-incidentally, Shastri, the previous Indian to achieve the feat, was on commentary duty during the historical over.

    Jordan Clark – April 24, 2013

The most recent addition to the elite club before Whitley’s feat came in a Second XI game between Lancashire and Yorkshire at Scarborough.

The Lancashire batsman achieved the rare full-house against Yorkshire’s left arm spinner Gurman Randhawa who had impressive figures of 2 for 15 in 12 overs before the fateful over on the second day of the match.

Though it might have been a second XI match, it did put Clark in the illustrious company of Sobers, Shastri, Gibbs and Yuvraj.
