  • Paine is set to make a shock return in the first Ashes Test.

Australia are set to drop wicket-keeper Peter Nevill with Tim Paine poised to make a shock return to the side in the team for the first Ashes Test against England beginning of November 23.

The Australian selectors are set to announce the squad for the first two Ashes Tests at Brisbane on Friday and according to cricket.com.au, Nevill is set to be snubbed.

Nevill was marked to make a return to the side in place of incumbent Matthew Wade, a year since he last donned the Baggy greens of Australia.

Paine meanwhile has not played for the country in more than seven years with his last Test coming against India in 2009.

The Tasmanian has struggled with injuries throughout his career and was not picked up by Tasmania for the Sheffield Shield at the start of the season with Wade being preferred to the 32-year-old.

His only first-class ton so far in his career came 11 years ago, with Australia coach Darren Lehman having scored a century himself in the time since.

Renshaw is also in danger of losing his spot to Cameron Brancroft.

Paine had scored an unbeaten 71 for Cricket Australia in a warm-up game against England along with a half-century for Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield.

According to the report, batsman Matt Renshaw is set to be dropped too following a string of poor showings in the Shield season. Uncapped Western Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft is set to open instead along with vice captain David Warner.

Another player who could make a shock return to the side is batsman Shaun Marsh with the report adding that the 34-year-old seems first choice for the No.6 batting slot.

Marsh last played a Test in the series defeat in India earlier this year but since then has found himself without a Cricket Australia contract. He has however impressed in the JLT Cup in the summer where was named as the player of the tournament.
