  • A Nathan Lyon cutout sits atop a Christmas tree.

Australia cricket fans have taken Christmas celebrations to another level as the Ashes hysteria continues to grow.

A recent trend of fans placing the face of off-spinner Nathan Lyon on the top of the Christmas tree instead of the traditional star has emerged and it is taking social media by storm.

The 30-year-old enjoys a cult hero status amongst the country’s cricket fans due the famous ‘Nice Garry’ phrase which became a thing due to wicket-keeper Mathew Wade’s constant muttering of it whenever Lyon bowled a delivery.

This year, the ‘Nathan Lyon Appreciation Page’ on Facebook has seen fans post images of Lyon’s cutout sitting atop their Christmas trees and it sure is a sight.

Nicknamed at the ‘GOAT’, the spinner has been leading Australia’s charge in the Ashes and is the leading wicket-taker in the Tests for the calendar year.

The latest gallery of images on the Facebook page was accompanied by the cheeky caption of ‘Get into the Christmas spirit by putting a true star on the Christmas tree’.

Last year, in an attempt to create a world record, the page had appealed to fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) during a Test match with Pakistan to shout ‘Nice Gary’ in unison when the spinner would bowl the third delivery of his first over.

In a remarkable co-incidence, Lyon picked up the wicket of Sami Aslam on this third delivery leaving fans in stitches on social media.
