  • Keeping a keen eye: BCCI’s Sanjay Patel

The West Indies Cricket Board has appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India to come to a “mutually agreeable solution” over the abandoned series between the sides.

An internal contractual dispute led to the West Indies squad leaving India midway through a tour last month.

The BCCI have responded with a $42million (Dh154.2m) damages claim against the WICB, which it holds solely responsible for the financial loss incurred due to the cancellation.

It is well known that West Indian cricket does not have the means to meet such a figure and WICB officials are hopeful of forging a diplomatic solution, despite hard words from BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel on Wednesday.

A statement released following a WICB directors meeting read: “The WICB confirms receipt of a letter from the BCCI.

"The WICB will continue to use its best endeavours to meet with the BCCI to discuss all relevant matters pertaining to the premature end to the tour of India.

“The WICB respects the decisions of the BCCI but continues to trust that discussions can result in a mutually agreeable resolution.

“The WICB reiterates that the events which led to the premature end to the tour of India were extremely unfortunate and the WICB is committed to ensuring that such events do not recur.”

The statement said categorically that manager Richie Richardson had not been fired, contrary to speculation, though there was no reference to reports that all three West Indies captains – Denesh Ramdin, Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy – had been sacked.

The statement went on to provide an update into the internal wranglings, following a meeting of all parties at the behest of two Caribbean prime ministers, Ralph Gonsalves (St Vincent and the Grenadines) and Keith Mitchell (Grenada).

It read: “The WICB advises that following the meeting, the Board sent a draft joint statement to the attorneys representing the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) and the players and is awaiting the response of the players’ attorney.”
