  • Heads down: New Zealand.

Daniel Vettori has tipped a strong response from New Zealand after their crushing defeat by England at Edgbaston.

Vettori, who ended his illustrious international career following the World Cup, did not watch the action unfold, believes the tourists will not be licking their wounds for too long.

“It’s hard to read too much into a scorecard but sit back and say that Joe Root and Jos Buttler must have played exceptionally well,” he said.

“New Zealand had to be aggressive to try and chase it down but just to hear about Root and Buttler’s hundreds off 71 and 66 balls is pretty impressive.

“But New Zealand have been confident in their abilities to turn it around relatively quickly. It’s the nature of cricket, these days, that you get an opportunity to play again soon and rectify or continue on with what you’ve been doing.

“All those guys in the New Zealand team are incredibly experienced so I know they’ll bounce back pretty quickly.”

It was New Zealand’s first ODI following the retirement of Vettori, who took 305 wickets in 295 appearances, including a star turn at the World Cup where he collected 15 scalps at an average of 20.46.

While it has already been suggested his absence was keenly felt, the 36-year-old preferred to highlight the potential of his replacement and fellow left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner, who took one for 64 in eight overs and made 15 with the bat on debut on Tuesday.

“Once you retire, you move on and get on with it, there’s no point in living like that,” said Vettori, who will end his playing career following the conclusion of the Caribbean Expert talk: Daniel Vettori. Premier League next month.
