  • Iqbal (l) and Mahmudullah (bottom r) put Bangladesh in control.

Half-centuries from Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh retain the upper hand in the first Test against South Africa in Chittagong.

Having bowled the Proteas out for 248 on day one, Mustafizur Rahman with four for 37 on debut, the Tigers reached 179 for four before rain forced an early finish to day two.

Bangladesh have lost all eight previous Tests against South Africa, seven by an innings, but will resume 69 behind with six wickets in hand as they look to build a first-innings lead.

An opening stand of 46 ended when Imrul Kayes overbalanced against Stiaan van Zyl and was stumped down the leg side by Quinton de Kock for 26 and Mominul Haque quickly followed, bowled by Simon Harmer for six.

As the players left the field at lunch, a discussion between Tamim and De Kock ended with a shoulder-barge which may attract the attention of match referee Chris Broad. South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw was fined 50 per cent of his match fee in the second one-day international between the sides after bumping Tamim with his shoulder.

Tamim continued to build his score after the restart and he and Mahmudullah took their partnership beyond 50 before both reaching the milestone individually.

The opener was first to get there, from 119 balls with only two boundaries as he demonstrated his increasing maturity at the crease. He quickly added his third four but was dismissed for 57 when, deceived by a slow, looping full toss from Dean Elgar, he failed to connect with a sweep and lost his leg stump.

Mahmudullah was one short of his half-century at the time and soon got there with his seventh four, clipped off his legs off Dale Steyn, but he was trapped lbw by Vernon Philander on 67.

Rain arrived at the end of that over and an attempted restart was abandoned after a solitary ball, which at least allowed Shakib Al Hasan to get off the mark, before the heavens opened again to end the day. Shakib will resume on one with Mushfiqur Rahim on 16.
