  • Taylor denied Australia in fine fashion.

Ross Taylor made his highest Test score while Kane Williamson continued his stunning form as New Zealand closed in on Australia's mammoth first-innings total in the second Test against Australia in Perth.

Taylor finished day three at the WACA unbeaten on 235, having shared in a third-wicket partnership of 265 with Williamson (166), as New Zealand reached stumps on 510 for six.

That left the Black Caps within 49 runs of Australia's total of 559 for nine in a match where batsmen have dominated.

Starting the day on 140 for two, Williamson and Taylor helped the tourists progress to 352 before Australia were finally able to celebrate another breakthrough, with Josh Hazlewood snaring Williamson with the new ball.

Williamson was easily caught by Mitchell Johnson at mid on but not before the 25-year-old had recorded his fourth century in five Tests in 2015, during which time he has also made two 50s and averages 105.

His departure brought captain Brendon McCullum to the crease and contributed 27 to an 80-run partnership with Taylor before being bowled by Mitchell Marsh.

BJ Watling (one) and Doug Bracewell (12) also came and went as Australia battled back in the evening session but Taylor remained unmoved, having passed his previous Test-best score of 217 while also bringing up 5,000 Test runs in the process.

Taylor's 235 is also the highest score by a New Zealander against Australia.

Australia lead the three-match series 1-0 but have suffered an injury blow to batsman Usman Khawaja. Khawaja, who has scored two centuries in the series, suffered a "moderate hamstring muscle strain" while chasing a ball on day two in Perth and will miss both the final Test in Adelaide and the Hobart Test against the West Indies.
