  • Top gun: David Warner.

Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody admits they might have bungled by not giving David Warner an opening role from the start.

The Australian left-hander has smashed 90 and 59 as opener in the last two matches and played the lead role in Hyderabad’s back-to-back victories.

Before these two matches, Warner had batted at No3 and 4 scoring 375 runs from 11 matches but once he regained his customary position, he has been on a rampage scoring 149 runs in just two matches.

Warner is now placed third in the top run-getters’ list with 524 runs.

Explaining the logic in the delay in promoting Warner, Moody said: “Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But we had the world’s No1 ranked Twenty20 batsman in Aaron Finch opening the batting with Shikhar (Dhawan).

"So David had to play a different role for us, because we felt the left-right hand combination was probably going to be more formidable at the top of the order, and with David coming in later, it would give us that depth of balance.

“In the first part of the tournament, we didn’t quite click as a top order and if we could have it all over again, we may slightly change it.”

Hyderabad (12 points from 13 matches) are still in the playoff race and a victory against Kolkata Knight Riders tonight will improve their chances further.
