  • Full house: Every stadium in UAE was sold-out - including here in Sharjah at KKR vs RCB.

Interim President of the Board of Control For Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian Premier League (IPL) Sunil Gavaskar has described the UAE leg of IPL 7 as the “highlight” of the tournament.

The opening 20 matches of the 2014 IPL were hosted here in the UAE due to the general election taking place in India.

And it proved a huge success, with 19 of the 20 matches across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah complete sell-outs as over 300,000 cricket fans flocked to watch the action.

Ahead of Sunday’s final, which will see Kolkata Knight Riders take on the winner of Saturday’s clash between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab, Gavaskar hailed the decision to bring the tournament to the Emirates.

When asked in an interview with IPLT20.com what had been his highlight of IPL 7, Gavaskar replied: “I think the highlight for me was the way the UAE leg went through.

“The response we got from fans and organizers there was incredible. The organisation and the management went on very smoothly as well.”

Gavaskar was appointed head of the BCCI and IPL by the Supreme Court of India on an interim basis in March after former president N Srinivasan was ordered to resign due to his involvement in the ongoing spot-fixing investigation.
