Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan hit the joint-fastest fifty for his team in the IPL on Wednesday during the match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Batting first at the Eden Gardens, Mumbai were 62-2 after nine overs when Kishan walked in at number four. Going all out from the word go, Kishan launched the second ball he faced – against Kuldeep Yadav – for a six over long on.

Kishan, 19, then took three fours off leg-spinner Piyush Chawala in the next over to get the ball rolling.

But he saved his best for the 14th over by Kuldeep as hit four consecutive sixes – over square leg, mid wicket, long on and mid wicket again. His third six of the over brought up his fifty off just 17 balls which is the joint fastest for Mumbai Indians. His fourth six of the over had shades of MS Dhoni’s helicopter shot.

In all, Kishan hit five fours and six sixes during his 21-ball 62 against Kolkata. Interestingly, Kishan is a wicketkeeper from the Indian state of Jharkhand – the home state of Dhoni.

Kishan’s knock helped Mumbai post 210-6 in their 20 overs.
