  • Winning smiles: Challengers u13s celebrate their wins.

Gulf Asian School Challengers had a remarkable outing in both their under-13 clashes in the Sport360°National School League, first defending a total of 82 against Pakistan Islamia Higher Secondary School before delivering a commanding 60-run win over NIMS Rising Stars.

The one player who stood out for the victors was opening batsman Thasin Rahman. He gave a glimpse of his batting ability in the morning match, hitting 17 in his team’s total of 82 against the Hawks that set the stage for his bowlers, led by Mohammad Imran Nawaz (3-13), to eke out a four-run win.

Even though he tweaked a muscle in his right leg in that game, Rahman came back for the clash against NIMS. Rahman hit a whirlwind unbeaten 77 to help Gulf Asian post 135 for no loss in their 15 overs with two hits over the fence and 11 fours. The NSL had not seen a single six hit before this and Rahman provided two maximums in one game.

After his impressive innings, Rahman said there was only one way he was going to bat in the match.

“I really couldn’t move my legs much and running between the wickets was a bit tough for me. So I decided to continue hitting. The wicket in the morning had a bit of help for the bowlers but by the time we played in the afternoon, it had eased out and I could play my shots,” Rahman said.

Even though some of his shots were more about power than technique, Rahman’s sixes were hit down the ground and that’s something the 12-year-old is proud of.

“Those are my favourite areas to hit. I look to hit down the ground as much as possible.”

For Gulf Asian coach Deepak KP, it was a great day in the field for his team.

“It was a great effort from the boys. Early in the day, when the wicket had some help, the bowlers did a good job. And in the afternoon, Rahman showed what he is capable of,” he added.
