  • Worthy winners: Indian High School celebrate their success.

Indian High School became the winners of the inaugural School Invitational Tournament at the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City after a convincing win over Our Own High School.

The two sides had met during the group stages of the tournament that featured eight specially selected school teams and the Indian High School had won that previous match by a thumping 140-run margin.

And although Our Own High School improved on that earlier showing, they were still not able to close the gap between the two sides, with the Indian High School ending up 43-run victors. It was the climax of a superb event and Indian High School captain Keith Pinto was delighted to secure the victory.

“It is our first time in an indoor tournament and it has been a really good experience,” he said. “Everyone was unsure (how we would get on) and we got out plenty of times but we kept our cool in most of the matches.

“It has been a great privilege for the school (to play in the tournament at the ICC Academy) and winning it also has been a privilege,” he added.

Indian High School were worthy winners after not only impressing in the Pool stages and the semifinal against Delhi Private School, but also by producing a clinical performance in the final.

Batting first they made 23 in the first three overs and although Our Own High School fought back bravely to keep the final total to 53, it was still a score that proved too much to chase down.

Matches take place with standard ICC Academy indoor cricket regulations with each match involving 12 overs per side and each team featuring eight players although up to 12 could be part of a nominated squad for the tournament.

Shashwik Shetty of Indian High School was the star of the show as he finished with five wickets. It was a contribution that not only defined the final but also earned him the Player of the Match award.

ICC Academy head coach Will Kitchen said: “The idea behind this tournament was to give the young players of each of the eight schools the chance to have fun and also play some highly competitive indoor cricket against their peers and that is exactly what happened.

“Congratulations to the Indian High School, commiserations to Our Own High School and also well done to all the other schools that took part. And with the tournament proving such a great success, I am sure it will go from strength to strength in the future.”
