Award Winner: Ashar Zuberi

Every week, we feature a top performer from the extensive pool of cricket talent in the United Arab Emirates.

From the many blossoming cricketers in the region, we name a standout player from each round of the U-17 league organised by the Emirates Cricket Board.

CRICKETER OF THE WEEK – ASHAR ZUBERI

Ashar Zuberi is our award winner this week after his spell with the ball helped It’s Just Cricket Academy beat G-Force Academy by 39 runs on Saturday.

The right-arm medium-fast bowler took four wickets for 20 runs in a 4.4 over spell.

Batting at number six, he chipped in with a handy 27 from 25 balls.

COACH’S INSIGHT

Zuberi’s coach Brad Staddon was pleased with his performance but was quick to add that he played well in the previous week as well when he took 2/17 against Desert Cubs.

“He did well this week and also in the previous game. He has been practicing hard and bowling consistently,” Staddon said.

He also commented on the players’ team work and unity that has helped them pull off a few upsets this season.

“There’s an energy running through the team at the moment because we’re a new academy and we’re upsetting quite a few teams. All the players are backing up each other”

The whole bowling unit has been in good form, especially after dismissing Desert Cubs for 80 in their previous game.

“He [Zuberi] took four wickets but all our other bowlers were going at an economy rate of two or three. The whole bowling line-up did well and that’s why we were able to restrict them [G-Force Academy].”

Every week, we feature a top performer from the extensive pool of cricket talent in the United Arab Emirates.

From the many blossoming cricketers in the region, we name a standout player from each round of the U-17 league organised by the Emirates Cricket Board.

CRICKETER OF THE WEEK – ANSH TANDON

Ansh Tandon is our award winner this week after his stunning innings helped Sharjah Cricket Academy to a 171-run win over Emirates Cricket Academy on Saturday.

The left-handed batsman scored 119 runs from 77 deliveries to help his side post a commanding score of 235/6 in the first innings.

Batting at number two, his innings included one six and 15 boundaries.

Tandon is currently the leading scorer in the competition and one of the most prominent players in the region, representing the UAE at U-16 and U-19 level.

COACH’S INSIGHT

Tandon’s U-17 coach Kashif Daud lauded the young batsman after his match-winning innings.

“I think he’s a very talented player. Sometimes he struggles to make big runs, he can make 30, 40 and 50, but cannot convert big scores,” he said.

“He wasn’t afraid against Emirates Cricket Academy and played one of his best games so far.”

“He’s our key man and captain of the side, a very responsible player too.”

With two matches remaining, Sharjah are in pole position to reach the knock-out stages of the competition.

“We’ve only lost one game in five, so Ansh will be an important asset to the team for the rest of the league,” said Daud.

UAE bound: Eoin Morgan is set to play in the T10 Cricket League

The inaugural T10 Cricket League, which has attracted top international cricketers including Eoin Morgan and Shahid Afridi, has been brought forward by one week and will now be held between December 14 to 17.

The league was originally scheduled for December 21 to 24 but will now be played earlier at Sharjah Cricket Stadium to give players’ ample time to prepare for the Big Bash League and international tours.

Pakistan Cricket Board announced last week that their top players will be available for selection but wanted them back in time for a training camp ahead of their visit to New Zealand early next year.

“We have done this to accommodate the bigger pool of players because the Pakistan team is travelling to New Zealand on the 27th December,” Shaji Ul-Mulk, chairman of the T10 Cricket League, told Sport360°.

“They have a camp and will get ready on the 20th. We were advised by the Pakistan Cricket Board into looking into the possibility of moving the dates and we were able to do that. It will also allow players, who are competing in the Big Bash League, which starts from 19th December, to play in the T10 Cricket League as well.”

Although it’s a new format that will see around 70 elite cricketers – including Chris Gayle and Virender Sehwag play in 10-overs-a-side matches, which will last 90 minutes each, there has been no shortage of interest.

The six franchises – Punjabi Legends, Pakhtoons, Maratha Arabians, Bangla Tigers, Colombo Lions and Kerala Kings were all announced during the glittering launch ceremony in Dubai earlier this month.

With the new tournament dates now in place, Ul-Mulk revealed that the player draft will now take place on Saturday November 5 in Dubai.

He also confirmed that tickets will be on sale from November 1.

“Tickets will be on sale in different outlets and will be starting from Dh20,” he said. “We want to make the cricket games affordable for people to watch.”
