  • Hurry up: Nine teams have signed up for the tournament with spots still up for grabs.

It’s billed as the biggest tournament in the UAE, and cricketers can be part of this year’s Superstars T20 event with team registrations still open.

The T20 tournament is back for its third edition which will be played between April 1 to May 1 at the 7he Sevens in Dubai.

Nine teams have already signed up and in all, 16 teams will be divided between four groups, with the top two qualifying for the knock-out stages.

With Dh100,000 in prize money and with some of the UAE’s leading domestic teams set to feature, it promises to be an exciting event.

Previous tournaments have attracted some of the finest players in the country including UAE nationals vice-captain Khurram Khan, Shaimar Anwar as well as Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi and Pakistan international Umar Akmal.

And this year’s event looks set to be even bigger.

“This is one of the biggest tournaments in the UAE in terms of prize money in a competition that allows players to clash with the best,” said Rahul Dalwale, manager of the Superstars T20.

“We have had some former Pakistan internationals play like Hazan Raza, while there have been a number of UAE internationals in the two previous tournaments.

“This gives the players the platform to play against cricketers who have played at the highest level and it’s an opportunity that doesn’t come very often.

"This tournament gives them a chance to learn and improve as a player.”

Eyes on the ball: A total prize money of Dh100,000 is up for grabs.

He added: “We have a number of teams outside the UAE who are interested in playing which is great to see as the tournament is growing year by year.”

Wings Ahmedabad Aces are the defending champions after they retained their title with a six-wicket win over Ibsons Sialkot Sharks at the Fairgrounds Oval in Dubai.

While the tournament format remains the same, the venue has been changed this year.

“7he Sevens is a truly wonderful ground that already hosts a number of tournaments.

"The facilities are fantastic and the conditions are really good.

"The players will be really pleased with the conditions as the matches will all be played on turf wicket.”

Dalwale, whose company Web Channel launched the Corporate Premier League T20 earlier this year, believes teams who sign up will relish the opportunity of playing in the tournament.

“This isn’t for just the top players in the UAE, it’s open to every cricketer,” he said.

“This is a tournament that is improving year by year and that is shown by the number of closely-fought games that have been played in the past two editions.

“It will be a fun and competitive tournament from the start to the end, and we want the teams to enjoy their experience.”
