Frank Schleck won stage 16 of the Vuelta a Espana on Monday as Joaquim Rodriguez stole the race leader’s red jersey.

Rodriguez (Katusha) was rewarded for his late acceleration at the conclusion of the 185-kilometres stage from Luarca to Ermita de Alba Quiros.

Fabio Aru (Astana) could not keep pace with the Spaniard, who finished eight minutes 51 seconds behind Schleck in ninth on the day, as the Italian conceded two seconds and the overall lead by one second.

Rafal Majka (Tinkoff-Saxo) is one minute 35 seconds behind, Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) 1min 51secs adrift and Mikel Nieve (Team Sky) fifth, 2:03 behind.

Schleck (Trek) soloed to victory by 1:10 from Rodolfo Torres ( Colombia ), whom he dropped 3km from the summit of the concluding climb.

It was the Luxembourg rider’s first win in more than four years and first since he served a one-year doping ban. Schleck tested positive for Xipamide, a diuretic, during the 2012 Tour de France.
