  • Deadly Diego: Costa pounced to score Chelsea's first to lead his side past Leicester.

    Chelsea 2-0 Leicester

Chelsea's £32million striker Diego Costa scored again as the Blues maintained their 100 per cent start to the Barclays Premier League season with a 2-0 win over Leicester.

Costa, who had opened his account in the 3-1 victory at Burnley on Monday night, was on hand to convert from close range just after the hour, which ended the brave resistance of the Foxes.

Eden Hazard stroked in a second for Jose Mourinho's men on 77 minutes.

Leciester, back in the top flight for the first time since 2003/2004, had proved hard to break down and could have taken the lead when David Nugent was put clean through, but Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois – again picked ahead of Petr Cech – made a smart save.

Both sides were positive during the opening stages, and Leicester, playing in red and having made a couple of changes from their opening-day 2-2 draw with Everton, were not looking in awe of a side expected to contest the Premier League championship once again.

    Crystal Palace 1-3 West Ham

Summer signing Mauro Zarate volleyed a debut goal in West Ham's 3-1 Premier League victory at Crystal Palace to ease the pressure on manager Sam Allardyce.

Stewart Downing and Carlton Cole also fired home as the Hammers eased past the managerless Eagles, who were unable to add to Marouane Chamakh's smart finish.

Palace's second straight defeat plunged the south London club into further distress, with the board still hunting a replacement for Tony Pulis.

Hammers boss Allardyce only clung onto his job in the summer after promising the West Ham board more expansive, attacking football.

    Swansea 1-0 Burnley

Swansea backed up their opening-day win at Manchester United with victory over battling Burnley at the Liberty Stadium.

Nathan Dyer's 23rd minute goal saw off the Clarets but it was not without scare as Burnley dominated the second half and probably should have returned home to Lancashire with a point.

Danny Ings was a constant thorn in the Swansea defence and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski had to make an excellent second-half stop to deny David Jones and preserve the 1-0 success.

    Southampton 0-0 West Brom

Southampton and West Brom remained in search of their first wins after battling out a goalless draw at St Mary's. In a game of little imagination or verve, chances were few anf far between.

West Brom's record-breaking signing Brown Ideye provided the best moment of a dour second half with an impeccable half-turn to set up a one-on-one with Fraser Forster, but the Saints stopper saved well with his feet.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

Ten-man Newcastle registered their first point of the new Barclays Premier League season after fighting out a disappointing 0-0 draw with Aston Villa.

The game at Villa Park was one of few real chances, particularly in the first half, with Magpies midfielder Remy Cabella sending one wide when he might have done better.

The visitors had further opportunities just after the break, with Daryl Janmaat having a header pushed over by Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan and firing a shot just off-target.

Magpies substitute and debutant Siem de Jong was then denied by a decent Guzan save towards the end, before Mike Williamson was sent off in the dying seconds having collected two yellow cards in quick succession.
