  • Clinical: Jeremy Menez.

Jeremy Menez scored a brace while Philippe Mexes too found the back of the net as AC Milan beat Cagliari 3-1 at the San Siro last night.

The result eased some of the pressure on Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi, whose side had to play the game in front of a near empty stadium after fans decided to boycott the match over concerns about the way the club is being governed.

In the match, Milan took the lead with Menez’s cracking right-footed effort. Cagliari levelled thanks to a fine effort by Diego Farias soon after the start of the second half.

Milan took the lead two minutes later, Mexes crashing a bouncing volley into the bottom corner. Menez then put the result beyond doubt after taking a penalty that was awarded for a foul by Luca Ceppitelli.

Meanwhile, Chievo put plenty of daylight between themselves and the relegation zone thanks to a 1-0 win over Palermo.

Alberto Paloschi scored the only goal of the game and also missed a penalty, while the Sicilians ended the game with only 10 men after Sinisa Andjelkovic was given his marching orders late on.

The defeat practically ends any outside hopes Palermo still might have harboured of qualifying for Europe next season.

Chances came from both ends of the field with Chievo taking one of theirs 10 minutes before half-time. Paloschi controlled the ball well from Meggiorini’s pass before beating Sorrentino with his shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Chievo’s lead was tested but they held on for a win which takes them 11 points clear of the bottom three.
