  • Bayern are looking to help the refugees.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have announced they are to provide support for the influx of refugees in Germany – financially, materially and practically.

According to a statement on the Bundesliga club’s website, they have promised to play their part in helping with the “largest arrival of refugees in decades” by establishing a training camp, in partnership with the City of Munich.

Children and youths of migrant families will be given German lessons and the opportunity to play football, receive meals and be fitted out with all the necessary football equipment as part of the collaboration between Bayern and the city council.

Furthermore, Bayern have pledged one million euros in proceeds from a friendly match which will be donated to refugee projects, selected in agreement with the Bavarian interior minister Joachim Herrmann and Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter.

Prior to Bayern’s next Bundesliga game against Augsburg on September 12, Bayern’s players will be accompanied by a German child on one hand and a refugee on the other “in order to send out a signal favouring the integration of refugees”.

In addition, Bayern’s own charitable foundation ‘FC Bayern Hilfe eV’ will contribute its services to “help spread joy” among refugee families in the time before Christmas.

“Bayern Munich see it as their sociopolitical duty to help the distressed children, women and men who are being forced to flee their homes, to support them and to accompany them in Germany,” said Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Herrmann added: “This is a great and exemplary initiative which I really welcome and support. It’s another amazing example of the great willingness to help and the culture of welcoming people that our country has.”

Thousands of refugees have been arriving at Munich’s central railway station in recent days with police thanking volunteers and Munich residents for donations of food and clothing which have been distributed to those arriving.

“Bayern are sending out an important signal here,” said city mayor Reiter. “I’m delighted by the club’s great engagement, which is why I am also pleased to commit the support of the City of Munich.”
