  • Sharjah have completed their quota of foreign imports with the acquisition of South Korean star Kim Jung-Woo as their designated Asian player.

The northern side were frustrated in their efforts to capture Iranian captain Javad Nekounam after his country’s FA vetoed the move – taking umbrage at the UAE’s rebranding of the top-flight as the Arabian Gulf League.

But the club have put that episode behind them with the signing of the 31-year-old South Korean international. Arriving from Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Woo brings with him a wealth of experience having played 66 times for his country, including impressive displays at the 2010 World Cup.

Woo will join Brazilian contingent Ze Carlos, Gabriel Felipe and Mauricio Ramos at the newly-promoted side in the club’s latest shrewd move in the market.

The signing of the South Korean star was formally announced on Friday, while he was taken around the King’s facilities by executive driector Ibrahim Al Nemer before being introduced to his new team-mates and Brazilian coach Paolo Bonamigo.

Speaking after his arrival in the UAE, Woo said: “I am deeply delighted to join the team of Sharjah and face this new experience. I hope that I can meet the expectations of the board of directors at the club, headed by Sheikh Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Thani, who has put faith in me.

“I will put all of my expertise and capabilities into serving the team and achieving the best results and performances to help my fellow players and bring happiness to the fans of Sharjah.”

Woo was one of the key pillars of the South Korean team in their successful qualification for the 2014 World Cup. Technically gifted and versatile, equally adept as a striker as he is in a defensive midfield role, the position he played with distinction at the 2010 World Cup.

The new signing will take part in his first training session later Saturday and is rated as 50/50 to take part in Sharjah’s final friendly on home soil this Monday where they take on Al Arabi of Saudi Arabia.

After a successful two months of summer signings, coach Bonamigo is looking forward to taking his new club into the 2013/14 season. “I have good players here and my goal is to build a good team,” he said. “I have built a strategy with the board here. I think this team has a good future ahead of it and it is exciting to be back in the top flight.

“There are many young players here like Saif Rashid, Yousef Saeed, Abdulla Hussain, Mohammad Yousef and Mohane Khalifa. There is a slight problem that they won’t be with the team all season, but my goal is to build a new, strong team, and the players will be all together.”
