  • Former Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea defender William Gallas has joined A-League side Perth Glory.

The 36-year-old defender had previously been linked with a move to Melbourne Glory as well as clubs in the Middle East and America, but has instead opted for Perth.

"I look forward to wearing with pride the jersey of Perth Glory for this season," he said in a statement after agreeing to a one-year deal, subject to a medical.

"I hope to help my new team mates and club achieve success in this season and hope to help deliver to the fans of Perth the championship they are looking for. I look forward to this new challenge and hope to excite the fans."

The signing of Gallas, who spent over a decade in the English Premier League, is another huge boost to the booming A-League, which is still riding a wave of momentum following last year's arrivals of veteran trio Alessandro Del Piero, Shinji Ono and Emile Heskey.

Glory coach Alistair Edwards said he was thrilled to add a player of Gallas' experience to his youthful side. "What better player in world football to bring to Western Australia than someone with 84 caps for one of the best footballing nations in the world?" Edwards said.

"Gallas fits into our vision of providing the best environment for our youth to flourish."

Australia captain Lucas Neill played against Gallas during their time together in England and told Sport360° recently: "It will certainly keep the profile of the A-League high which is what everyone has been trying to achieve in the last couple of years.

"His experience and performances should again raise the level of the league and the standard of the league."
