  • FIFA will begin implementing goal-line technology at the Club World Cup next month with Africa becoming the fourth continent to be used in the testing stages.

The match on December 11th between Moroccan’s Raja Casablanca and New Zealand’s Auckland City will be the first match on African soil to use the technology, which is being implemented by German company GoalControl.

Two sites in Marrakech and Agadir have already been inspected and the installation process is set to begin in order to have all stadia meeting the requirements before the tournament kicks-off in December.

A statement from the world’s governing body explained the process: “Once installed and calibrated, the system will, as always, need to demonstrate it is working by passing the final installation test that will be performed by a FIFA-accredited test institute before the competition starts.

“The different conditions and challenges compared to the previous FIFA tournaments in which goal-line technology was used will help to demonstrate that such systems can be installed in different types of stadiums and environments.”

FIFA have proceeded in investigating the possibility of rolling out goal-line technology across the globe with the licence handed to GoalControl for the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup.

The technology was used for the first time in professional football during the 2012 World Club Cup in Japan and has since been rolled out in the English Premier League with all 20 stadiums being equipped with 14 cameras to assist match officials in decision-making.
