  • AC Milan have signed midfielder Sulley Muntari on loan from Inter Milan until the end of the season.

The Ghana international, who becomes a free agent in the summer, has made just four league appearances for the Nerazzurri this season.

A statement from AC Milan read: “AC Milan announces it has acquired Sulley Muntari on a temporary loan.”

Milan opted to make a move for the 27-year-old after losing midfielder Alexander Merkel last week to a knee injury for two months.

Merkel only returned to Milan earlier this month in joint ownership from Genoa with the Rossoneri facing a shortage in midfield due to the injury problems of Mathieu Flamini, Gennaro Gattuso and Alberto Aquilani.

Muntari becomes the Rossoneri’s fifth reinforcement in the winter transfer market and their second of the day after teenage Austrian striker Philipp Prosenik joined from English club Chelsea.

Muntari first made his name with Serie A club Udinese when he signed for them in 2001. He spent the first season with the reserves before finally making his debut in the following campaign. After five successful seasons, the Ghanian fulfilled his desire to play in the Premier League, joining Portsmouth, at the time led by Harry Redknapp.

His enjoyed a successful campaign at Fratton Park, winning the FA Cup as the big clubs started to take notice. Inter Milan came calling after new coach Jose Mourinho’s attempts to lure Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard failed.

Muntari started brightly enough but soon began to fade for Inter, leading to a loan move to Sunderland at the beginnnig of last year but they decided against signing him permanently.
