Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from International retirement so England need a new skipper. Sport360° anaylse the three leading candidates for the role.
Wayne Rooney
Rooney Is a leading contender to captain both club and country in the season ahead. He is now an experienced squad member, with 95 caps and 40 goals. Question marks about temperament have declined, but was not at his best at the 2014 World Cup.
Joe Hart
Hart Is one of the few players guaranteed a starting spot under manager Roy Hodgson. Has grown into a vocal presence, certainly not lacking for confidence. At 27 is starting to mature, though some managers prefer outfield players to be captain.
Gary Cahill
Cahill is an outside bet for the post. Is only in the mix because of a lack of experience throughout Roy Hodgson’s squad. He provides a calming presence in defence, where he is an automatic choice. Still, it would be a shock if the 28-year-old took the armband.
