  • What an introduction: New signing Van Dijk scored winner.

Liverpool secured the bragging rights in Merseyside on Friday night with club record signing Virgil van Dijk scoring a late winner on his debut at the Kop end.

The 2-1 victory over Everton was much-deserved for the hosts as Jurgen Klopp’s men secured their passage through to the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The hosts did so without either of Philippe Coutinho and Mohamed Salah – but new signing Van Dijk stole the headlines.

Here, we look at how Liverpool players rated:

    FORMATION: 4-2-3-1

LORIS KARIUS: Apart from Everton’s goal, in which he could do nothing about, the Liverpool No.2 goalkeeper enjoyed a comfortable night between the sticks. 6

JOE GOMEZ: Lucky to come away injury-free after Wayne Rooney’s poor first-half challenge and was otherwise assured defensively as well as willing to get forward. 6

VIRGIL VAN DIJK: Solid, composed and brought confidence to Liverpool backline. He did, however, lack desire to track back for Everton goal but his late winner was the stuff of dreams. Fine debut. 8

JOEL MATIP: Struggled to contend with Yannick Bolasie in the lead-up to Everton’s equaliser and should have probably brought the winger down. 5

ANDREW ROBERTSON: Had his hands full with the threat of Bolasie down the right but did well to tussle with Everton winger’s power. 7

JAMES MILNER: Liverpool’s model professional tucked away his first-half penalty in style and was the cool customer the hosts needed in the heat of Derby battle. 7

EMRE CAN: Solid in the middle of the park and stuck to his guns by keeping things ticking over. 6

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN: Strong running down the right-hand side and always offered Liverpool something. Tracked back well, too. Supplied corner for winner. 7

ADAM LALLANA: Showed cleverness to win first-half penalty but would have liked to have had more of an overall impact in the absence of Salah and Coutinho. 6

SADIO MANE: Quiet and perhaps the trip to Ghana on Thursday for the African Player of the Year awards took it out of him. Missed company of the two aforementioned attackers. 5

ROBERTO FIRMINO: Led the line with good effect, keeping Everton’s defence occupied – but didn’t really have clear-cut openings. 6

GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM ON FOR LALLANA ON 70 MINUTES: Slotted in on the flank, though, he didn’t have much of a say-so. 5

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD ON FOR GOMEZ ON 77 MINUTES: Sured things up and got stuck in – did what Klopp would have asked of him. 5

DOMINIC SOLANKE ON FOR MILNER ON 77 MINUTES: Had little influence late on. 5
