  • Moving on: Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Spanish giants Real Madrid to return to Manchester United is pure speculation, sources close to the club have told ESPN.

The Portugal star is apparently unsettled at the Bernabeu over a dispute regarding an improved contract. Spanish newspaper AS reported this week the 32-year-old feels betrayed with the club failing fulfill a promise to increase his wages in light of Barcelona rival Lionel Messi’s new deal.

Ronaldo’s former club Manchester United remain quiet on any speculation linking them with a move for the forward, suggesting the Old Trafford favourite doesn’t have any real desire to leave Spain.

However, AS insist Ronaldo’s departure from Madrid is just a matter of time, with the star already having told team-mates he’ll be leaving at the end of the season and his wish is to see out his career in the Premier League.

Ronaldo played an integral part in Real’s success in retaining the Champions League last season, after which Madrid President Florentino Perez reportedly promised him a new contract.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently under contract until June 2021 but has expressed his desire for a pay-rise following news of Neymar and Messi’s new deals at Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, respectively.

Ronaldo, who is currently struggling with form, has netted 422 goals in 418 official games for Real, including a brace against Juventus in Los Blancos’ 4-1 victory in the Champions League final back in June.

He’s scored 16 goals this season in all competitions but just four in La Liga, where Real are fourth in the standings, 19 points adrift of leaders Barcelona.
