  • Replacing Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United will boss was always going to nigh on impossible task for his future successor.

And it could even become that little bit toughter after the legenadary Scot revealed his intention is to take up another role at the club he has transformed into one of the world’s biggest during 25 years in the managerial hot seat.

Ferguson, 70, made it clear recently that he had no intention of walking away from the top job  at Old Trafford, and said he will continue for another “two or three years” provided his health permits it. “I will remain active. I think there will be a role for me at United after I finish,” Ferguson told BBC Radio Five Live.

“I think you always want to go out on a winning note,” he added. “Hopefully we can do that. I don’t know how long I can last now but if my health stays up I don’t think another two or three years would harm me.

Fergie, who had previously stated his decision to step down at the end of the 2000-01 campaign only to perform a dramatic U-turn, has been vocal in recent weeks about who could possibly replace him when he eventually decides to step down.

Ole Gunnar Solskajer and Ryan Giggs, both United legends, have been mentioned while speculation continues to link Jose Mourinho, a close friend of Ferguson, with the job he once described as the “biggest in football”.
