Former Auxerre boss Guy Roux to put UAE coaches through their paces

  • Legendary French coach Guy Roux is to conduct a training workshop for youth-level coaches and trainers in the UAE this weekend.

    Roux, 73, who spent over 40 years in charge of AJ Auxerre, guiding the club to a league and cup double in 1996 and three more French Cup triumphs (1994, 2003 and 2005), will conduct the training lessons on Saturday and Sunday.

    The sessions, split into two with the the mornings dedicated to lectures and pratical work in the afternoons, will be held at the Dubai Municipality Club along the Dubai-Sharjah road in Al Jaddaf.

    The aim of the workshop is to better equip coaches and trainers dealing with youth-level football players in the country, especially those involved in at the club and academy levels.

    Roux was reponsible for unearthing a host of players during his 44-year tenure at the Stade l’Abbé-Deschamps, bring through the likes of Laurent Blanc, Basile Boli, Eric Cantona, Philippe Mexes and Djibril Cisse.

    And it’s now hoped the veteran coach can impart some of his knowledge onto local coaches. “It is an honour to have a coach of this caliber come and educate our youth coaches who are responsible for taking the game to the next level in Dubai,” noted Dr. Ahmed Saad Al Sharif, Secretary-General, Dubai Sports Council.
