  • Bad situation: Ron-Robert Zieler.

German World Cup-winning goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler has revealed was staying at The Address Hotel in Dubai during the fire on New Year’s Eve.

Hannover No1 Zieler was staying in a room on the 12 floor but was having dinner in one of the hotel’s resturants when the blaze started last Thursday evening, engulfing the middle and upper floors of the 63-storey building.

Zieler was evacuated along with the rest of the hotel’s guests but on his return to first-team training with Hannover on Monday said he lost all his possessions inside the room to the fire.

That included his passport and the 26-year-old was forced to get an emergency document from the German Consulate in Dubai in order to return to Germany this week.

The incident comes at the end of the troubled year for Zieler after he was part of the Germany squad forced to spend the night inside the Stade de France on November 13 during the terrorist attacks in Paris.

Zieler said: “I assume that 2016 will be better.”

Zieler, who was a youth-team player for Manchester United before signing for Hannover in 2010, was part of Germany’s victorious 23-man squad at Brazil 2014 but didn’t get on the field during the tournament.
