  • David Trezeguet wants to finish his career with Argentine giants River Plate after admitting he endured a “difficult” time in the UAE.

Trezegeut, a World-Cup winner with France in 1998, arrived in the Emirates to much fanfare last August, penning a lucrative one-year deal with Abu Dhabi club, Bani Yas.

But his time in the UAE capital was far from plain sailing and after failing to find the net in any of six appearances for last season’s Pro League runners-up, he left the club just three months after joining due to “personal problems”.

Not long after it emerged that the former Juventus and Monaco striker had signed for his boyhood heroes, River, on a two-year deal, a move that did not go down well with his long-time agent Antonio Caliendo.

“This is a move the player undertook on his own with his father,” Caliendo admitted in an exclusive interview with Sport360°. “I was very happy bringing the player to Bani Yas but David decided this was the best move for his career and I disagreed.”

Trezeguet, who famously scored the golden goal winner in the final of Euro 2000, has not looked back since swapping the UAE for Argentina, finding the net 10 times in just 15 games for River as they look to make an immediate return to the top-flight.

And having put his nightmare spell in the UAE firmly behind him, ‘Trezgol’ as he was affectionately nicknamed during his eight years with Juve, is now content to finish his career in the country of his birth.

“I’ve had a difficult 18 months. But I’m happy. I feel important again and I want to end my career here,” he said.

River, who sufferd the ignominy of relegation from Argentina’s Primera Division last season for the first time in their history, currently sit one point off leaders Instituto in Nacional B with six games to go.

Tezeguet scored the all important winner in a 1-0 win Gimnasia Jujuy in their last outing, cutting the gap to Instituto to a solitary point after the leaders could only draw 0-0 at home to 16th placed Guillermo Brown.

He couldn’t hit a barn door in his brief and unhappy time in the UAE, but Trezeguet is back doing what he has done throughout his career best, sticking the ball in the back of the net.
